Solar Panel FAQ
How do solar panel systems work?
A home solar panel system consists of several components that work together to convert solar energy into usable power for your home’s lights, appliances, and devices.
1. Solar Panels
Solar panels are made of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into direct current electricity (DC). Your panels generate energy as long as sunlight is hitting them, even on cloudy days when output may be reduced to 10% to 25% of their normal capacity. However, the electricity produced needs to be converted before it can power your home, which requires an inverter.
2. Inverter
The inverter changes the DC electricity from your solar panels into alternating current electricity (AC), which powers your home. It is typically installed on an exterior wall or in the garage.
3. Main Electric Service Panel
The solar electricity from the inverter flows to your home’s main service panel, where it’s distributed throughout your home to power your lights and appliances. Excess energy generated by the solar panels is sent to the grid, and you could earn energy credits for the surplus power you provide.
4. Electra Energy Meter
Our meter monitors your solar system’s performance 24/7, sending real-time data to us through a wireless signal. It helps us ensure everything is running smoothly, and if any issues arise, we’ll resolve them promptly without requiring you to take action.
5. Utility Meter
When your solar panels generate more energy than your home needs, the excess power is sent back to the grid and credited to your electric bill. If your solar system produces less than you require, the utility meter records the power drawn from the grid to meet your needs.
Do home solar panels have a warranty?
Our solar panels and all related equipment come with factory warranties. Additionally, our monthly solar lease and prepaid solar plans (solar PPAs) include proactive 24/7 monitoring and free maintenance. If any issues arise with your solar panels or battery, we’ll dispatch a technician to repair them at no additional cost. This level of service sets Electra Energy apart from other solar providers.
What does the solar panel installation process look like?
Once your installation is approved, a site assessment will take place. Our technicians will confirm the design of your system, after which our Solar Design Experts will finalize the plan for your approval. We’ll then submit your design for permitting, a process that may take up to eight weeks. Once approved, either Electra Energy or one of our trusted partners will handle the installation. We partner exclusively with top-rated installers, ensuring your solar system is of the highest quality.
Following installation, a final inspection will be conducted by the city or county. Once the system is approved and connected to the grid, we’ll handle the necessary paperwork with the utility company. When they grant Permission to Operate (PTO), your solar energy system will be up and running, and you can start powering your home with clean, renewable energy.
